Maybe I'll clone a KVM branch and see how development is going, I hear that they're pretty much equal in benchmarks now. My understanding is that IOMMU is chipset-based and requires specific hardware integrated into the motherboard - certainly when setting up PCI passthrough I had to choose the chipset pretty carefully as only some AMD chipsets were supported.
